With his family by his side, Philip Daniel Calder passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23rd, after a courageous battle with cystic fibrosis, Philip was in his 35th year.
Phil grew up in St. Catharines, attending Carlton Public School and later Governor Simcoe Secondary School. Despite the challenges of his illness, he had an unwavering love for sports. In his early years, he played hockey and lacrosse, but during his time at Brock University, he became a standout member of the varsity squash team. CHCH News even featured him in a special segment, highlighting how someone who had undergone two double lung transplants could compete at such a high level. In addition to squash, Phil was an avid golfer and spent many rounds at Rockway Golf Course.
Phil was an inspiration to all who knew him. He never let his health challenges define him. Instead, he chose to live with remarkable strength, resilience, and an unshakable spirit. His determination extended his life far beyond what many expected, and through it all, he remained a source of encouragement and joy to his family and friends. Those fortunate enough to know him learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, gratitude, and living life to the fullest. While his passing leaves us heartbroken, we are all deeply grateful to have been part of his journey.
Phil was the beloved son of Carol and predeceased by his father, Gordon (2013) Calder. He was a cherished brother to Kevin (Tamara), Jeff (Lynn), Tim, Marty (Tonya), and Mickey (Deanna). He was also a loving uncle to Tianna, Chase, Taylor (Alex), Luke (Alyssa), Micki (Caitlin), Cloe, Marisa (Ben), Zack (Carly), Amy, Cam, Alexa, Jessica, and Josh. Phil will be dearly missed by his sisters-in-law, Tanya and Mary, and by the many friends and extended family who loved him.
A private family graveside service will be held on May 17th, followed by a Celebration of Life at Amici’s in Thorold from 1-4 PM. All are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Phil’s name to SickKids Hospital in Toronto or Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
